EDUARDO MATA
Eduardo Castillo originally named Jaime Eduardo Vladimiro Mata was a Mexican conductor and composer. He was born on September 5, 1942 in Mexico City. He studied guitar privately for three years before enrolling in the National Conservatory of Music where he studied with other composers such as Carlos Chavez and Julian Orbon. There he produced several pieces based on Classical and Romantic models as part of his training with Chávez (Sinfonía clásica, Sinfonía romántica, songs). Other compositions were written between the 1950s-1960s, which included a 12-note piano sonata, the three Improvisaciones, the Cello Sonata and the Symphony no.3 which were written in atonal, aleatory style that made use of extended instrumental techniques. (Grove Music Online)
As a recipient of the Koussevitzky Fellowship in 1964, he continued his studies at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass., where he studied conducting with Max Rudolf and Erich Leinsdorf and composition with Gunther Schuller. (New York Times) In 1965, became head of the Music Department of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and conductor of the Guadalajara Orchestra. From 1966-1975, he conducted orchestra at the University, which became in 1972 the National Autonomous University of Mexico Philarmonic Orchestra. (Bach-Cantantas) From 1977-1993 worked as music director at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
Mata conducted a wide repertoire and was particularly recognized for twentieth century music, particularly of Latin American composers. His recordings consist of over seventy recordings, most with the UNAM Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and Solistas de Mexico, many of which were Mexican recording works. On January 4, 1995, Mata was flying his own Piper Aerostar with a passenger and shortly after take off the engine failed which caused the plane crash near the Cuernava Airport that caused his death. In Oaxaca, Mexico the Eduardo Mata Autumn Festival was established in his honor.
